Christopher Nolan just confirmed that Batman 3 will happen-was anyone in doubt? Anyway, now it is official. He reported that he is working on his brother's script who also penned "The dark knight". It seems that we may have another masterpiece coming in our hands from the comic book genre. Honestly, cannot wait to see the riddler!

Appreciate Life

Ahh...guess today was a day of mixed feelings.

Woke up to a sad news that my primary school classmate was killed in a tragic accident in New York yesterday. Totally set the gray tone to my day. The rest of the day was still and reckless.

Life isn't giving us a lot of chance, I think. Be grateful, be passionate - for we don't know about tomorrow. Though Shakespeare made it sounded dull, I agree with him that life is indeed short.

In the mist of despair, I'm yet feeling accomplishment tonight for completing my work and assignments. After this, I guess I would have to face anxiety because three big exams are coming up next week, one after another.

Excel in college classes with ANTS

The first quarter of the semester is over and I believe most students have already had at least one test if not more with their respective classes. As a Junior this new semester, September was rather busier than I have expected. Classes, homework, job, student organizations, etc., all upon which require different levels of energy and commitment.

While we as students juggle between these multiple roles, what is the best - and simplest - way to excel in our classes?


I have a piece of advice: follow the ANTS formula.

'A' is for attendance. Show up at your classes/lectures. Never compromise your attendance with something that you may have to do over the night. For example, do not let practices or meetings and discussion to go on till late night, which may eat into your rest hours. Remember that you are here in college to attend classes. Attendance show always - and it is so important that I have to repeat, always - your no.1 priority.


'N' is for note-taking. An average student attends a lecture with a conscious mind; an excellent student attends a lecture with a smart mind. What differentiate an 'A' and 'B' grade student is the ability of that study to catch the gist of the lecture and jot them down in a systematic order. Learn the Top 5 tips to effective note-taking with Dennis G. Jerz here. Trust me, these notes will help you tremendously when it comes to tests and finals. Besides, by taking notes in class it also helps you to stay alert and focus. That means, you will not fall asleep when you are writing something.


'T' stands for your texts. This is the simplest yet the most incredibly challenging task for students who doesn't event bother to remove the shrink wrap that comes with their textbooks. Find your best hours of the day to read your textbooks. Some of us consider ourselves the "morning people" while some the other way round; some of us need to have something to chew when we read whilst some just need some music - you figure it out for yourself. Reading your texts before going to classes is very much like bring your sword with you to the battle field. You don't want to come in empty handed.


And finally, 'S' is for support. We all need help some point in our learning process. Take advantage of your instructor's office hours. From what I have experienced over the past academic year, almost all instructors or professors are willing to help students with their learning. If you have questions about your assignment, or just some confusion over the lecture in your class, schedule an appointment with your instructor to talk over it. Make use of the privilege you have to learn from the people who are professional in their field. Professional tips are definitely more handy than what your friends/classmates can offer. After all, it's your professors who set the exam questions!


Your first quarter of the semester may be pretty awakening. If you have been struggling with classes, or simply being lukewarm in your studies, take these tips with you for the rest of the semester. Just like it wouldn't be a picnic without the ants, it wouldn't be a successful semester without the ANTS!

Compare: self-fulfilling prophesy, or simply overconfident


Have you experienced this: You walked into an exam hall with a super-positive attitude; sat for the test, and scored with flying colors. You knew you had that faith to do well, even with very little effort put into the preparation. It was that "gut" in you that you trust.

Let's talk about that "gut."

Robert K. Merton's concept of self-fulfilling prophecy states that the positive feedback between beliefs and behaviors, can directly or indirectly causes a prediction to be true. For instance, if Jimmy thinks that he can ace his classes as long as he puts in effort and determination, he will eventually do so, according to the concept of self-fulfilling prophecy.

The Thomas theorem also backs this idea firmly. It states, "if men defines situation as real, they are real in their consequences."


I try to relate these ideas with human personalities: self-esteem, self-control, and self-confidence. Does high self-esteem leads one to better performance? How does self-control affect self-esteem? What about self-confidence; is it a by-product of good performance?

I like to take examples from daily routines. Take for illustration that Jimmy, again, is given a term paper assignment for his Media Law class. Having that "positive interaction" between his attitude and beliefs that he will be able to complete the assignment on time, Jimmy did not start writing until the last week of the semester.

Using the concept of self-fulfilling prophecy, do you think Jimmy - who defines his situation as real - could still cause his prediction to turnout true?


I doubt so.

I'm still finding that fine line between self-fulfilling prediction and overconfidence. I believe many factors can contribute to one's success or otherwise. In Jimmy's case, procrastination can be a main issue. Whether his confidence level is boosted by his previous successes and experience, or by plainly following the feel from his guts, I am not sure. There isn't have to be a single reason to his results.

How about another similar assignment given to Jimmy the following semester? Will his past performance affect his self-esteem and hence level-down his self-confidence? Or will that experience be a boost to his self-control and increase his self-confidence relatively?


I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to this comparison. I still believe that everyone has the potential to be great. Nevertheless, it really comes down to knowing who you really are and expand the best of out yourself.

Students in colleges and universities really need to find a balance between knowing-they-can-surely-do-it and the amount of effort they put into one task. When both sides of the end are equally leveled, the making of true prediction seems whole lot realistic - rather than being simply overconfident and achieving nothing in the end.

In short, trust your guts, but give some sweat to it, too. Cheers!

Dealing with Failure: Persistence & Perseverance


Haven't tried this before but this is the first time I am actually writing from the school cafeteria computer stand.

With the noises behind me I'm roaming through websites, updating Facebook status and looking at some pictures posted by friends. The drizzling rain definitely doesn't help making my day. It brought so much emotions and feelings; may be this is why I love and at the same time hate rainy days.

Well I've been thinking about Persistence and Perseverance.

The 2P's aren't something that we talk about everyday. They are more like a long term goal: trying to be consistent with our performance and do not give up trying even if we fall down during the process.

Let's see, what are some of the things that always fail us in life? School grades? Parental approval? Sales target? Personal goals?

We can't control how most things turn out, but we can decide for ourselves how we want to deal with the results, agree? How we face the outcome depends on our sense of perception.


Take for example: when we fail to achieve the objectives or the goals we've set for ourselves or one's organization, how should we response to it?

Give up?
Or keep pushing on?

I know, "giving up" doesn't sound glamor at all. However, that is the easiest way out, just give me your consensus on that. Many a time we tell ourselves how hard we've tried reaching the set goals and we failed, quitting seems to be the closest button to press on.

However, what happens after we quit? Does the problem get solved on its own? Do you get to escape from all the blaming and criticism? Not at all!

The problem doesn't solved; you will be remembered for a lousy job. What's the point of quitting then?

Thomas Edison failed big time before he finally succeeded in inventing the electric light bulb. I'm not saying that we all should be as great as the inventors in the past. But, at least we don't want to be remembered as the "failer."

Be persistent: Continue your effort no matter what happens.
Be persevering: Never say die.

I believe as long as be keep the momentum going, perseverance will prevail. Do not let failure hold you back. Even if you fall, fall and fall over, stand back up, and keep going.


I remember what my band instructor told us: The hard you fall, the higher you re-bounce.

If you have given up something at this point, try going back and continue working on it. Remember, "no body trips over mountains. It is the small pebbles that cause you to stumble. Pass all the pebbles in your path and you will find you have crossed the mountain (author unknown)."

So, keep pushing on.

Resident Evil Afterlife scores big at the worldwide box office

Woa! "Resident evil Afterlife" opened number one almost worldwide. Of course a major contributing factor was the 3D. Since it was shot and executed in perfect 3D by applying the James Cameron's system rather than post-coverted, movie audiences seem to dig it. So far the reviews have not been kind but it got better ones than the previous two installements. A nice sum of 80 million worldwide

Yes, killer week is back.

This week is just so very crazy.

As I'm writing, my mind is still worrying about my advertising principles test tomorrow. Things have been pretty busy and my weekly schedule is being filled up before every Monday. Assignments, meetings, job, leadership and responsibilities are sucking my energy up almost everyday.

Guess I really needed a breather.

Boom, it just crossed my thoughts that it is God who placed these assignments, job and responsibilities in our life.

Does God have any idea how much we are going through in life? How much tiredness we have to bear by the end of everyday; how much pain our minds have to undergo, does He have any idea at all?


I'm sure He does.

Then why did He make life so hard for us? He didn't.


Last semester, my acting class professor, Bruce Hyde, showed me the difference between busy, and stressed. He acted two possible situations of men who were assigned the same task. We can be busy yet attend to each task diligently. On the other hand, when we are stressed, we stumble through everything and see things like burdens, with a touch of anxiety. So, all we actually have to do is:
  1. Breathe. Always remember to breathe.
  2. Making sure we manage our time well, and
  3. Set forth our priorities. Such priorities, I believe, should be flexible.
God teaches us the values in life through the tasks He assigned to us everyday. True enough. If it was not for the tons of homework piling on our desks every week, we may not learn discipline. If it was not for the deadlines given by our professors, we may not learn planning/strategy. If it was not for the tiny amount of time we have to meet our friends, we may not learn friendship.


I am learning to slow down and rethink my situation. I want to take the best out of life. With that, I pray those students who are also stressed about school can take time to lay back and enjoy their lives.



We just need some colors in life, sometimes.

I recently posted this quote by Pearl Strachan on my Facebook page: "Handle them carefully, for words have more power than atom bombs."

How true.

Apparently there are people who just fail to keep their opinions to themselves. I am addressing the negatives or destructive criticisms that people have on others.

Many a time we all have personal views about someone, something, or some events. We can choose to like or dislike what we see and hear.


Note, I understand there is a given freedom of expression in the country. People are allowed to speak off their minds provided they are speaking the truth.

Yes, I do learn that in my law classes.

However, we must also consider that we can choose to display our expression, or not, even though we may be speaking the truth.

For example, if one does not favor a religion, he or she does not necessarily have to openly "express" their feelings of aversion.

What you think may be right in your law and order; nonetheless, it may not be the same for others who choose to practice their interest.

So what if you were right about something that you have the urge to publicize? Have you tried thinking the other way round if another person does the same towards yourself? How about it?

Humanitarian Dale Carnegie said that "when dealing with people, remember you are not dealing with creatures of logic, but creatures of emotions."


What made us humane are our individual differences. The one-size-fits-all concept is practically not applicable when it comes to ideologies.

Therefore, take my words, be considerate.

Try to be tolerant to lifestyles that may differ to what you are comfortable with; try to accept different cultures and practices; try to learn from one another. Just try.

Many things in our lives are subjective; so, never say never. Do not be too certain about something before actually experiencing it.

Even if you have experienced it, remember that personal experiences are biased.


Most importantly, think before you act. This will save you from troubles that may cost you a regret of your lifetime.

Take this with you; you may eventually turn out to be a more welcomed friend around the circle of life.

The Consulting Detective


You must have come across this man in famous English detective stories - Sherlock Holmes, the fictional detective character created by a Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

I am a big fan of Mr. Holmes for his indescribable ability to take on any disguise and solve any cases using his considerably "real" science of deduction.

This man is not a very welcomed figure during his time in London. He was described as a man who can make no friends because of his freaky behaviors and attitude. Apparently he can just "see through" people - what they've done, eaten, gone to, etc.

He was, however, a very helpful person to the police who can't seem to solve cases. A "consulting detective," is what Mr. Holmes referred himself as.


Dr. John Watson, is a significant character created for Mr. Holmes. He helped Mr. Holmes in solving cases by providing the medical science's point-of-view or the "second opinion," according to the freaky detective. Dr. Watson is also the bibliographer for Mr. Holmes.

Dr. Watson regarded Mr. Holmes as a person with Bohemian lifestyles and habits, with no concern for good order and contemporary standards.

If you dissect Mr. Holmes' brains, you may result in the following findings: He has no knowledge of literature, philosophy, and astronomy; feeble knowledge of politics, variable knowledge on botany, limited geological understanding, profound knowledge of chemistry; accurate yet systematic knowledge of anatomy; immense knowledge for sensational literature; an expert singlestick player, boxer and swordman; also plays the violin well; and a good practitioner of the British law.

While lodging (and working) with Dr. Watson in Baker Street 221B apartment, Mr. Holmes occasional hires a group of underclass people to gather information for him. They were called "the Baker Street Irregulars."

Mr. Holmes first appeared in publication in 1887 and was featured in a total of four novels, 56 stories. Stories cover from 1880 to 1907, with a final case in 1914.


Anyways, after all, I just wanna encourage you to watch "Sherlock" on in BBC TV series, written by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. The TV show stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Dr. Watson. This show "wow" me because it is written in the modern time. So, expect iPhones, texting, and all tech savvy features. Hope you'll enjoy this.

Alien prequel-not one but two! why?

Yep you heard sci-fi fans. "Aline" is getting not one but two prequels! I personally think that's a terrible idea. What made alien such an amazing and scary foe, was the fact we knew nothing about it before.  Space Jockey was splattered for years till Dallas et al discovered the floow filled with alien eggs. It's almost been a month. Things are picking up really quickly in life. Classes are going in full speed, schedule being filled up everyday, and everyone seems to be pretty busy with own life.


Anyone for a cup of coffee?

Slow down. Focus. There are things in everyday life that worth our attention. Some of these will never return once we missed it. So, take your time. My academic advisor said, "you're only young once, Jason. Enjoy!"

Also, I've been thinking of grad school. Not sure if it is too early to think about it. Though I have always wanted to move to another state, I'm still checking, St. Cloud State seems to offer the best cost for the course. Graduate assistantship and scholarships are more available here as compared to other institutions.

If you have any suggestions about which school has a good program for Mass Comm or Advertising/Marketing, do let me know. I'll appreciate that a lot.

Besides, there are so many wanna-do-things running in my mind: study abroad, local/international internship (Wall Street Journal has an opening), graduation, OPT, etc. I pray that God will really show me the way, in a more direct context.

I know, it seems like I'm rushing through school. But I can't tame the innate ambitious self. Gonna feed it with more desires and satisfactions. The more I feed, the more it grows. I am learning a lesson here.

"Life is always like that," wonder who taught my mom that. She never changed her messenger shout-out since she had her account. Now it turns out to be applicable here. I can't change what is going to happen tomorrow, but at least I can try my best to be positive.
