While in 2010, we saw a matchup between two mainstream divas (Christina Aguilera and Lady Gaga) that was poised to show a lot of promise in what many expected to be a great showdown, the prognosis of that outcome would not have seem as predictable as most people would have thought. Bionic’s performance was not only surprisingly underwhelming, but actually a major disappointment. The album entered the Billboard top 200 at #3 and sold a disappointing 110,000 copies. Christina’s last 2 studio albums saw first week opener’s that exceeded 300,000. Shortly after, Lady Gaga continued to strike it big with Alejandro (her last top 5 hit from the “The Fame Monster”).
Fast forward to today…It’s some fierce competition between 2 superstar divas, again. Gaga is set to face off with a new album “Born this way” , which currently has a May 23rd release date, but a few things have changed. It’s not 2010, nor is she squaring off against the same opponent. Britney Spears, pop music’s sensation who’ve arrived in the industry like a tidal wave selling over 25 million albums with only her debut has something brewing. Her team assures us that Britney (who has recovered from a mental breakdown in 2006) is in tip top condition and would evidently mean that she’s ready to dethrone one of pop’s current reigning champions and have her “hold it against her”. Her newest single of that same title has entered the Hot 100 charts at #1, making Spears the second artist in Billboard's history to debut at number one more than once (Mariah Carey is the first).
With Gaga set to premiere her brand new single “Born this way” at the Grammy’s on February 13th, 2011 things are sure to get quite interesting. Gaga has mentioned in many interviews how her new album will not only be the greatest album of the decade, but will change the world. …Thriller, anyone? Britney’s album, “Femme Fatale” which will be released March 15th promises to serve up some edge similar to the “Blackout” album, which has turned out to be one of the millennium’s most impressive offerings in pop music. Although these ladies may not have similar strengths and weaknesses in terms of what they are capable of artistically, these girls share more in common than only their blonde locks. Both these artist are first in line to be the great Madonna’s predecessor, who have outwardly given both her blessings. We look forward to seeing how this plays out.
