Living with a true self

We are told everyday of our roles and responsibilities: finishing up your assignments, babysitting your little cousins, doing the laundry, and so on. How often do we look into the mirror and ask ourselves this simple question, “what am I doing here?”

College is the time to discover our real self.

I believe we are all put into this earth for a reason, or two, depending on your expertise. Nevertheless, we sometimes are overwhelmed by our so-called liability in everyday life. For instance, a teacher’s role is to educate her students, a father’s role is to uphold the family, and for a student, well, is to conform to all the expectations set by the world. How pathetic.

As we perform our parts in our individual lives, why not give ourselves a little treat by understanding what our real “self” really need.

Now, let’s pause for a second from what you are doing and discover that real “self.”
One way we can realize our true self is through communication with our inner soul. I know this sounds a little creepy but it is not what you think exactly.

Communication with one’s self is self-reflection. We need to understand our own behaviors before we can perform the tasks that are put on us. So, look into the mirror again and be sure of whom you really want to be: a happy person, an overachiever, a pleaser, or a rock star – it doesn’t really matter.

The rule of thumb is to keep to the character you said you will become of. You cannot afford to lie to yourself. It is because you just cannot force your mind, soul and body into doing something against your will, you will simply collapse.

The process of self-reflection will lead to self-regeneration, where you will develop a new sense of self with a refreshed mind.

Next, bid your burdens goodbye and start living for yourselves. No, this doesn’t mean you should totally put away all your values, beliefs and perceptions. What is meant here is that you find an essential meaning in your life and cling that onto the center of your verve.

For instance, if you believe in serving the community as your source of energy, keep that on your main road and minimize changing lanes very often – many of the world’s politicians need to understand this.

Strip the layers off your identity and live truly. You can be emotional; you can be sensual; you just don’t need to live behind a mask.

Finally, embrace your fear and incompatibilities. Do not let your short-comings be the stumbling stones on your journey. None of us are perfect, period. God made each one of us unique in one way or another, this is undeniable.

“If you are afraid of standing alone at the center of the stage, be afraid!” quoting my theatre class professor. There is no need to pretend that we are stronger than anyone else because we are all the same anyways.

Hence, dear friends, take it easy.

Do not judge and be judged. This life that we are all embarking on is a process, not a destination. Instead of finding ways to climb up the social ladder, why not take the time to take pleasure in the bits and pieces all through the process?

So, put on your handsome shirt today, wear your favorite heels, but take that hat off. Step off your room with a renewed spirit and a focused identity. You will find that life, after all, is not that apprehensive; and that people are altogether nicer in anyways possible.
