Roles of Parents in the Brigade

I joined BB in 2003. After seven years of experience, I find that I am old enough in the Brigade cycle to put in two cents about "evolutions" of a parent's role in the Boys' Brigade.

I mustn't say parents' involvement with the Brigade has changed tremendously because I came in to learn about them gradually as I was given bigger responsibilities with the growth of my rank. Yet, I find that there's a trend in every generation of Boys and how their parents are concerned with the function of the Brigade.

At 13, I saw parents as the caretakers. They send their Boys to the Youth Center week in week out, help their kids to purchase uniform parts, drive them to functions (events) venues when necessary, etc. I have also seen parents who came every week to send a container of soup to their Boys, making sure that they are well fed for the Saturdays.

At 15, as a young NCO, I found that parents are supporters. I remember how most of the parents come to almost every company level activities, i.e. Awards Day, Enrolment Service, Pesta Review, and so on, to cheer for our Boys. Their presence were the pillars of every Boy's spirit and motivation to move on.

At 17, as a Sergeant of the company, I saw parents as the complaint-makers. Due to my position, I have very frequent contact with Boys' parents. Especially when something big is going to take place, like camps and outings, or competitions, I have always received countless phone calls from parents asking why their sons have to participate, and "why the tough trainings?" I remember how I can only keep silent when a few parents asked why the drill team only got second place in the state level competition.

At 19, I was placed to the Junior Section and I saw parents from another point of view - the providers. I saw how many parents make sure that their sons have the sufficient materials to come to BB meetings, i.e. lunch boxes, shirts to change for games, water tumblers, stationaries, etc. May be it is the position I held that I don't see parents as a separate party in the Brigade anymore.

Looking from an Officer's viewpoint, I find that parents' involvement in the company is very much as important as an NCO's. I believe many Boys have been through a period of "restrictions" from their parents to attend BB meetings, mostly during the exam seasons.

My mum always says, it is the Boy's decision to whether or not attend BB parades because nothing is impossible to achieve; if they have a willing heart to do so, they can achieve good results even without skipping any BB meetings. This is also the reason why I never missed a single meeting until my SPM months. I know that whether or not I skip BB meetings, my results would still be the same. In fact, I want to thank BB for "tieing" me to some regular sports since I don't do much of exercises when I prepare for SPM.

I believe a parent's support and motivation is vital for their Boys to attend the weekly BB meetings and special programs. Many times, I find that it was the parents' uninterested-ness in some BB activities that Boys were not able to join. This is why I've always supported the ideas that Parents should be one of the targeted customers when we sell BB.

Still, it is how much a Boy can convince his parents about the benefits of BB, be it by their academic results, or able to make friends, learn another language, acquire living skills and be independent. As a parent, if I see my Boys benefiting from an organization that doesn't require a very high yearly subscription, why not let my Boy join and learn together with a group of peers in a church ground?

The main reason I am writing this entry is because I receive a bunch of negative feedbacks from parents about the camps and trainings their Boys have to undergo to prepare for the coming Pesta. I want to quote my mum again in this matter: "If you don't plan to win in those competitions, why go Pesta? Go for your practices now!" I hope parents too understand that we Officers see the Boys as precious as they themselves do. So, parents don't have to worry too much placing their sons here with us.

Be they caretakers, supporters, complaint-makers or providers, parents' roles in the Brigade must not be overlooked.

May be someday, I might suggest the Brigade to spell Parents with a capital "P"!

Turned 20!

THANK YOU to those who wished me for my 20th birthday, I deeply and sincerely appreciate them. This year I received incredibly lots of wishes especially on Facebook. Thanks, I'm really touched.

Hmm. I have arrived at the second decade of my life. Indeed, time flies. Looking back at the boyish side of me 10 years ago, I have seen much changes: physically, mentally, socially, and most important, spiritually.

Sex and The City 2-Lord have mercy.......

I admit it. "Sex and the city" series is the perfect tv product for women. Hey i even laughed in some random episodes i have seen with these weird sex stuff and one liners. When Hollywood executives announced their plans for a movie version, women and chicas all over the world went nuts. That was three years ago may 2008...However, since the first one made unexpectedly millions of dollars, why we

Importance of A's

I listened to the radio FM 88.1 on my way to work on Monday and the DJs were discussing over a debatable topic with their call-in audience.

"Is getting A's important for students?"

Initially, I thought it was a very lame topic. However, after listening to many opinions of the public, I had the urge to call in too. But I did not anyway because I was driving. Thus, I want to make my points here.

First, I think A's should not be used as a measurement for a student's ability. Many parents always ask for straight A's from their children. Many of them think that grades should reflect "how smart" or "how capable" their kids are. That should not be the way. A student should not be judged solely based on their academic performance. Other aspects like bodily kinetic, musical talent, artistic skills, etc., should be taken into account too.

Grades do show how much a student care for his education. Ryan, one of the three hosting DJs, said that A's can be a form of motivations for students. I agree to his opinion. I think students can take A as a standard bar. If every student aim to score A's in their studies, I am sure they can at least score above average even at difficult subjects. Also, when a student receive A's on their grades report, it can be an engine of motivation - pushing them forward. In other words, these A's are promising rewards for their efforts put in, it can be very satisfying.

Nowadays, almost all college/universities or higher education institutions around the world look at students' scholastic performance as the major requirement for entry. Hence, it is certainly that a student perform at least at an acceptable level in order to qualify for a seat in their desired institutions. Especially for the local universities like UM and IMU, look at their requirements and you will be frightened.

Scholarships are definitely another tricky part of whether or not A's are important. Many of the students in Malaysia are classified under the middle class sosio-economic class. Many of them need some form of scholarships/financial aid to pursue higher education. Let's look at this picture together.

A very typical career path from secondary to higher education.

Yes, a LARGE sum of money is needed for education. If scholarships or financial grant do not come into the picture, students from a lower income family/with more children will have trouble continuing their higher studies. So, A's indirectly help students to move further ahead.

In short, it is whether we want to suffer now, enjoy later; or enjoy now and suffer later. Great saying goes: No pain, no gain. Or the Chinese would say, "There's no free lunch."

Now, is getting A's important for you? You decide.

A real workplace

I am now officially an intern at Creative Thumbprint Sdn Bhd. One of my bosses is Terence Yap, ex-Captain of the 1st Kuala Lumpur BB Company. Thanks to him, I am now in my suit sitting in front of a PC, in an air-conditioned office - Yes. A real-world working experience.

As a full-timer, my job scope ranges from proofreading to copywriting/editing. Basically I help to proofread printed materials before they are published and I also do commercial writing.

As for the first day, erm, I am pretty free.

I helped my colleague to proofread Pelita Methodist newsletter and wrote a logo user guide for ReignKL. That took up my morning. Another colleague of mine said that I can do facebooking and messenger now because there's nothing up at the moment.

So far, I'm still liking what I am doing: Writing; playing around with words.

Aite, will have to remain in the office here at Sri Petaling till 6p.m. Cheers!

When two or three come together...

Nothing recollects memories more than a humble chat over teh tarik and roti canai at a local mamak. Four long-missed friends - Addison, Kar Hoe, Sai Hong and myself - had finally met for some updates in life.

Initially, Addison made some arrangement to bring us to a TRAC gathering at Puchong Trinity Church. After that meeting, the four of us decided to simply sit down and chit chat at a mamak restaurant. It feels great to get updates from friends that you have not met for months, getting to know that has happened/is happening in their lives. Especially for Addison, I guess the last good chat we had was a year ago.

Addi, S'hong, KarHoe and me @ Port Dickson Beach 2006

Of course, we did talk about BB a lot. This is some sort the issue with us: whenever "two or three come together," we talk about BB stuff. Not a bad thing really.

Kar Hoe actually suggested to go for L4D before we call it a night, but Sai Hong is too tired to handle it. So we left Addi at Puchong and headed back to respective homes. Thanks to Sai Hong who drove us the whole night.

Aite, will go to BB this afternoon. Cheers!

A Fun Week

It's KiSiao group in action again!

Yesterday, a bunch of SEGIans or KiSiao United members went to sing at Neway karaoke and had steamboat session at Tasty Pot, just like we used to do before Jasmine and I left for the States.

"A..A! We've got Bieber fever!"

We sang for about 6 hours straight! The steamboat session was great. Recollected so much memories we had at college. The guys also went to play pool after the meal. Thanks to some "trainings" I had last semester at Lawrence hall playroom, my skill hasn't been bad.

Also, yea, I had an extreme makeover at my hair. I went for a hair cut the next day after my arrival at Malaysia. I couldn't stand the weather with such long and thick hair I had. Literally, I feel lighter and less burdening now.

Anyways, playful time is coming to an end soon. I am refocusing now to serious stuff here. I will not be going out so often beginning next week once my internship begin.

Also, BB needs a lot of help. The big project that I am currently involve with is putting together the music recording for 1st KL National Singing Competition. It is really a difficult task trying to modify the original melody and to add rhythm to the song. Nonetheless we have a group of talented artists and musicians so I think the turnout for this Thursday's recording will be fine.

I know, you might just find this entry some random updates. Please bare with me, I have yet to find inspirations here.

Cheers!

Another interesting story is about the formation of the river Cauvery with the help of Lord Ganesh. Learn how Kashi became the holy of Lord Ganesh. Learn how Kashi became the holy city after the killing of Durasana. Find out how Ganesh tests and blesses a mother and her daughter who are his devotees. The beautifully animated anecdotes of Lord Ganesh will captivate kids and make them learn many excellent values.

India and Hinduism had an impact on many countries of East and South Asia as a result of commercial and cultural contacts. Ganesha is one of many Hindu deities who reached foreign lands as a result. The worship of Ganesha by Hindus outside of India shows regional variation. The acceptance of Hindu ideas in ancient times still continue today in world religions.

Ganesha was a deity particularly worshipped by traders and merchants, who went out of India for commercial ventures. The period from approximately the tenth century onwards was marked by the development of new networks of exchange, the formation of trade guilds, and a resurgence of money circulation, and it was during this time that Ganesha became the principal deity associated with traders. The earliest inscription where Ganesha is invoked before any other deity is by the merchant community.

Assassin's Creed is a historical fantasy third person action-adventure/science fiction video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It was released worldwide in November 2007 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and April 2008 for PCs. The game centers on the use of a machine named the "Animus", which allows the viewing of the protagonist's genetic memories of his ancestors.

Through this plot device, details emerge of a struggle between two factions, the Knights Templar and the Assassins (Hashshashin), over an artifact known as a "Piece of Eden" and the game primarily takes place during the Third Crusade in the Holy Land in 1191. The game received generally positive reviews, and won several awards at E3 in 2006. A sequel, Assassin's Creed II, was released in November 2009. n September 2012, bartender Desmond Miles is kidnapped by Abstergo, a pharmaceutical company. He is to be used as a 17th test subject in the Animus, a device that can read the memories of Desmond's ancestors through the "genetic memory" left behind in their descendants' DNA. Desmond can then simulate the experiences of his ancestors in a virtual reality environment. Abstergo intends to put Desmond in the device to simulate the memories of one particular ancestor, Altaïr ibn La-Ahad, a member of a clan of Assassins.

The character of Al Mualim and his clan are based on an Islamic sect known as the Order of the Hashshashin from which the term assassin originates. The Assassins follow a strict code of honor called the "Assassin's Creed", which consists of three basic rules. Do not compromise the Brotherhood. They also follow the famous rule of Hashshashin founder Hassan-i Sabbah: "Nothing is true; everything is permitted".

Back to BB

Hot, just hot! I am sweating even as I was writing this entry.

I never thought the weather can be so affective to me. How I wish the wind here in K.L. could blow like the chills in St. Cloud. I felt so much better every time after the cold showers. I now miss the teens Fahrenheit.

So, I went back to 1st KL BB today. It was really nice seeing those familiar faces, young and old. My heart simply melts when I hear some juniors calling me as they saw me walking into the building. Those boys have grown so much. I felt so proud seeing some of them picked up leadership positions.

I remembered how we always called BB our second home when I was in secondary school. Now, I see BB more than a second home to me. It is more than just blocks of buildings: the Youth Center, Multipurpose Hall, or the Sanctuary. It is the Brigadiers that has made this home stood firm for decades. Everyone stepped into 1stKL came out as a different individual. I daresay I would never be the "me" today without the nurture from 1st KL. I am grateful for what I've received and now it's time for me to serve the next generation.

As for today, all we did was basically rearranging the competition song "A God who never fails." It is not an easy task to unlearn the tune that we've been singing since the 55th Anniversary celebration. I am sure the new tune now is more "killing" and competition-friendly.

There's so much to be done, yet so little time available. I understand that everyone has their busy schedule. I hope the boys can really make time to rehearse. All that officers can do is to prepare the ingredient, the chefs are the boys themselves. I pray for the best.

Also, I taught the Pre-juniors drill. It is kinda uncomfortable teaching my own cousin brother. Nonetheless, I treated every boy the same. (One boy cried after I gave him a 'don't-move!-look,' haha.)

Alright, I suppose there will be more BB postings in these three months. I will my best to put down anything that's interesting. The most attention now should be drawn towards the national BB pesta at Penang state.

Go, 1st KL!

There's no place like, Home.

LRT route, saloon's location, friends' phone numbers, and so many things that were once on my finger tips now had become strangers to me.

Still, I am glad to be home! Free meals, free internet, free transportation, unlimited resources, free satelite TV services...Ha! There's really no place like home!

Everything is fine thus far besides the killing weather condition. According to my mum, this kind of weather is considered the best compared to the earlier weeks because of the recent rain. Yet, I couldn't stand the humidity; I can feel the heat that rose from the ground and got stuck around my face. The air-conditioner is now my best friend.

Just a recap, I met some of my relatives last night after coming back from the airport. Had a really delicious chinese style dinner with them. Passed them some gifts and chit-chtted a little about U.S. life. Amazingly, I had adjusted well, better than I thought. I haven't experienced very much jetlag - slept at 1 a.m. and woke up 1 p.m. this morn...afternoon.

Thanks to my dad, I enjoyed my favorite "tabao-ed" noodles as brunch. Went out to shop for some necessities and a phone SIM card in the evening at Times Square and had a meeting with some Boys Brigade officers till late night. I am all in for the National BB Pesta Competitions!!

I'm also very grateful that God has provided me a lot of my needs since my arrival to Malaysia. Every single thing was made possible because of Him. He has even provided me with a job/industrial training offering from a advertising/branding agency called the Creative Thumbprint. It is a good opportunity because it is related to my field of studies - mass communications. I have yet to confirm my status because I want to double check my holiday schedules . However, I definitely see it as a chance to add on some real-world job experience to my resume.

Also, I will be meeting my long-missed BB Boys tomorrow at the band practice. It has been nine months since I last heard a note from them. I am sure they are preparing hard for the national band competition at the coming Pesta in Penang state. I will play a role in assisting the singing team for the national singing competition. Though it is really a task that requires tremendous efforts, I see it as a challenge to improve. I am sure we can come up with something realy fun and powerful with a team of talented individuals.

Well, I am sure greater things are yet to come. My plans or resolutions for this summer are:

1. Complete all three online courses with good grades.
2. Assist 1st KL in their operations adn especially preparing the Boys for the coming BB Pesta.
3. Get an industrial training/working experience
4. Spend quality time with friends and family.
5. Be good. Build a stronger relationship with God.
6. Earn some bucks.
7. Lose some weight.

Nonetheless, I miss St. Cloud a lot, and the friendly people there, especially the Martin's.

Really, thank God for Facebook. To all the folks out there, whether you are in the states or Malaysia, have fun this summer!

Prince of Persia preview

Well now what can i say? After the clusterfuck that "Clash of the Titans" was, Hollywood is turning his evil eye on the ancient realm of Persia. It is called Iran now for those who do not know history (just in case :-P). Persia/Iran has given us great cinematic stories mainly dramas or light comedies and a variety of tales have come from there or at least taking place! Aladin is one famous

Most notably, names of significant profiles in philosophical and psychological sciences appear throughout the series. The Proxies could almost be supporting characters, since they play such a vital role in the series.
